Born and bred in Buffalo, from a working class background, I know how important and sensible it is to re-use, to recycle. I believe this is one reason why I find the art of collage gratifying, sensible and fun.
My creative endeavors began only a couple of years ago making larger pieces. I have since been able to satisfy my myriad of themes with smaller canvases -- the results are a most effective compression of thought and image.
Most of the source material tailored to my themes is culled from 1950s and '60s LOOK and LIFE magazines. Great photographs, graphics and the pages tear quite nicely (very important!). Who would ever see these fascinating images otherwise?
Lately, I have been bitten by the irrational bug of surrealism; the scratching of the itch has been joy. Re-using and re-interpreting to create wonderfully perplexing new image-scapes. Hello Ernst. Hello Dali
Although the source material is dated, my themes have been quite contemporary -- child abuse, loneliness, politics, etc. Most of all, I strive for sincerity, integrity and universal threads of thought. I believe art can be fun and informative, without the rational restrictions of such banalities as "political correctness." Free your mind. Ole!
"Every piece of debris within our reach should be considered a precipitate of our desire." - Andre Breton
I have recently begun to collaborate with my long-time partner Scott Klaurens. Together, we co-founded the Claremont Collective with Cairn Hedland and have participated in several Artists in Buffalo shows. It seemed natural that we should work together. Scott also paints and designs tattoos and cards.
