Greg Kuppinger was born and raised in Syracuse, NY, where he learned to draw at a young age. After struggling for a few years to select a career path, Greg enrolled in a graphic arts program. It was during this time that he was introduced to oil painting. Through the study of old masters and hands-on work, he began to develop his own style and love for painting. Encouraged by instructors, Greg moved to New Paltz, NY to complete his Bachelors in Fine Arts, concentrating in oil painting. In the fall of 1998, he was granted the opportunity to work and study in Manhattan with Empire State College. This allowed Greg to be introduced to and critiqued by many successful contemporary artists, including Eric Fischl and Janine Antoni. This exposure increased his skill level and drive to create his own style of paintings. Positive reviews of Greg’s work increased his desire to pursue oil painting as a career.

Upon completion of his fine arts degree, Greg moved to New York City, officially beginning his career as a painter. While exhibiting his work in the city, Greg secured a position as a studio painter for Mark Kostabi, a leading figure in the East Village art scene of the 80’s and known for his album cover design for Gun’s and Roses’ Use Your Illusion. While working with this artist, he learned many sides of the industry. As a studio painter, he worked with a minimum of 12 artists from various countries throughout the world. This experience introduced him to other cultures, ideas, and methods, further developing his techniques and approach to painting. After working at Kostabi World for over a year, Greg felt the need to diversify his experiences. In addition to his work as a studio painter, he became a volunteer intern with Douglas Davis, a multimedia and performance artist. As an intern, he collaborated on ideas and framed and constructed installation pieces.

In the fall of 2001, Greg made the difficult decision to move back upstate for a more affordable cost of living and to concentrate on the development of his own body of work. He is currently living in Buffalo, NY, where he has begun to develop a new series of paintings. In addition to showing work in Buffalo, Greg currently has work on display in a traveling exhibition throughout Europe.
